Dennis Martinez, 66, served in the Marine Corp from '61-'66 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when he was 17 years-old. He and his 7 brothers all served in the military, and his family is part of the San Fernando Band of Mission Indians who were relocated to northern Washington when the US government carved out reservation land for Native Americans. He is part of the Vanyume tribe, originally from the Mojave Desert.

you can be him too, chant the troops,

follows the boy, still wishing for more than stubble

on his baby-soft chin.

towering over, says father

to war, you go, now is your duty

but rumbling streets, and white-brimmed hats

filled with beautiful young things

that only visit in the night

can't fight the feeling

nor the terror that lingers

when it's over.

touch the earth, young son

so I am in the almost-middle-of-nowhere-washington-state, spending a good chunk of the summer with a group of awesome people from syracuse, and a transplant from texas, for News21, a Carnegie-Knight fellowship that allows us to work on longterm projects of national importance.

our topic for the summer is the consequences of war for veterans...specifically looking at the different issues they face as they come home. while they are trained to go to war and are prepared for combat overseas, we are finding that most soldiers aren't prepared to come back to civilian life and transiting into the pace of daily life of living with their families or going to work. for some veterans from the Vietnam era, such as the story I am currently working on, the VA didn't recognize PTSD and therefore, many vets didn't get the benefits they so badly needed. and current Iraqi and Afghanistan vets are still struggling to get access to the benefits to which they are entitled.

while I am supposed to be a unbiased journalist, personally i think that if we are sending young men and women overseas to defend our country and the values we say we uphold, then we need to help them transition into life once they return.

oh photogs...

but this isn't about photographers.

rather, its about family.

and their importance.

their significance.

and how easy it is to forget that.

especially amidst the craziness that makes up the final

week of the semester of senior year.

when.we.are.swamped.

the point is, sometimes i forget to take the time,

to make the effort,

to put all else aside

and stop "navel-gazing" about all that needs to get done,

or how many things about which i am worried.

cause in the end, family does matter so much more.

they are permanent. school work, grades, projects....fleeting

the love from your family doesn't depend on a final evaluation,

they don't grade you and they certainly don't mark you down or

write you off when you have a bad attitude. or are just plain crappy.

they put up with your quirks.

and they give you grace when you make mistakes.

yesterday, i realized the importance of simply showing up.

driving lots of hours to show that you love and support your siblings/parents/etc,

especially during the significant moments in their lives.

and yesterday i got to do that for my younger brother

(who I swear sometimes acts older than i do!),

as he won the Patriot League Championship in lacrosse.

They beat Navy 11-8, and he had two goals

(this one amazing, flat-out dive).

and no i was not shooting, i was just yelling at the top of my lungs.

and saw every moment.

and reveled in my brother's glory.

a day spent with the important people in my life

goes so much longer, farther, deeper

than accomplishing any school work....

and thats hard to admit for a perfectionistic,

slightly obsessed, sometimes over-driven person.

heres to you, bro! i love you.

ill admit i move through life pretty quickly, often at a grueling pace.

cause, honestly, there is so much we are expected to accomplish in a day, a week,

a month, etc, that you can't possibly get it all if you didn't run from thing to thing.

so i run. fast.

and i am usually worrying about other things that I am not doing while in the

middle of doing something else.

and once you start doing life this way, it's hard to stop and slow down.

it's like you forget how.

you forget the feeling of slow.

and then, just the other day, it happened.

amidst a zillion things to finish, and demands from a lot of people,

and a desire to sleep,

i stopped.

mid-work.

and had one of the most meaningful conversations

with one of the most important people in my life.

i forget everything else.

free of the usual guilt that nags when i am not doing work, and free to enjoy the dialogue,

i found more of myself.

it was like spring after a very long winter.

and while my realization is nothing new or profound, i cannot emphasize how important

it is to pause, to breathe, to tingle with feeling,

even while life goes zooming past and around us,

because it proves to be so detrimental to ourselves if we are always caught up in the blur of life

and therefore miss out on the refreshment

we experience when we share life with people.

ask me to run a mile under 5:30, no problem (or i'll die trying)...

ask me to go sky-diving, no problem (i love free-falling)...

ask me to give a speech to a 1000 people (ok, ill give it my best shot)...

but ask me to sing in front of a class of 10 people, and i literally come undone...

today and wednesday are the final days of my voice class (for non-majors)...i took the class in hopes that i could prove to myself that I am not completely tone-deaf, and that i can sing...it's been almost an epic failure as i have spent the entirety of the semester cringing every time it's my term to sing, and i usually don't make it through the whole song as i shake in front of everyone...

BUT...

at the last minute, i changed my song to a much more upbeat one by Ingrid Michaelson. It's cute, catchy, and endearing. and my goal today is to make it through the whole song without falling apart, to be daring, and perhaps a little cocky (?) (i think you have to be to get up and sing in front of people well...or at least have attitude!)

i spent a good bit of my christmas trip with my family to the beach capturing what i believe to be
the little meaningful things that make my family wonderful. i shot mostly video and i hope to soon post
the short piece i created. i took very few photos, but here are a few that speak to me.

we rushed to the beach just in time to see the sunset. it rained the next three days.

my 8-year-old cousin...so proud of his teeth. he has an "expander" instead of braces, and often sounds like he is wheezing as he takes a breath. regardless, still mr. popular, he says to me that he "has girls all figured out."

my brother and i stand on the far left...good days.

I call it synchronicity. I give it a name, but I do no pretend to understand how it works. Its complexities, its ability to connect two separate human beings, two separate minds. Yet it happens, simply. And we are always surprised. Joyfully surprised that our minds and thoughts should find themselves at the same crossroads at precisely the same significant moment. Without a prior hint. It might just be a slight smile that spreads as each person understands and feels the other's thoughts. It is human connectedness at a profound level. Sometimes it would happen at a moment when you were afraid to speak, fearful of giving flight to the words about to tumble out of your mouth, that they might be the exact opposite of the other’s thoughts, of what is expected or desired. Yet, more often than naught, one finds that such synchronicity with certain people comes as easily and effortlessly as breathing. And the ease of it is beautiful.

i was reminded today of why i first decided to pursue photography. it comes from a deep conviction that i am called to help in any way possible in the freeing of people who are being oppressed through violence and are unable to advocate for themselves. the work of the International Justice Mission is profound in its scope and mission. check them out. they are my inspiration.
